How to Check Your Oil in 5 Easy Steps

You don’t need any special tools, just a paper towel and a few minutes.

1. Park on Level Ground

   Turn off the engine, let it cool, and make sure the car is sitting flat.

2. Pop the Hood

   Find the oil dipstick; it usually has a yellow or brightly colored handle that is by the engine.

3. Pull & Wipe

   Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean with a paper towel or rag.

4. Reinsert & Check

   Place the dipstick back in fully, then pull it out again. The oil should be between the 'min' and 'max' lines.

5. Check Oil Condition

   • Amber/Clear = Oil is good.

   • Dark/Brown = Change your oil soon.

   • Milky/Foamy = Possible coolant issue; schedule an inspection at a trusted auto repair shop.

When to Change or Add Oil

• Low oil: Add the recommended oil for your vehicle, but don’t ignore why it’s low.

• Dirty oil: Schedule an oil change right away.

• Frequent top-offs: You may have a leak or another engine problem that requires professional service.
