Why it's the easiest wat to protect your engine
If you want to keep your car running smoothly and avoid costly repairs, one of the best habits you can build is checking your oil regularly. Many drivers put this off because they aren’t sure how, but it’s a simple process that takes just a few minutes. At MotorAbility in Green Bay, WI, our ASE-certified mechanics know firsthand how big problems can start with something as small as neglected oil.
Whether you’re between oil changes or just want peace of mind before a road trip, here’s how to check your oil the right way.
Why Oil Checks Are Important
Your engine oil is its lifeblood. Fresh oil lubricates moving parts, prevents overheating, reduces wear, and keeps your engine performing at its best. When oil runs low or becomes dirty, it loses its ability to protect your engine. That’s when serious and expensive problems start.
Skipping this step could mean premature engine wear, reduced gas mileage, or even a seized engine. A quick oil check could save you thousands of dollars in future auto repairs.
How to Check Your Oil in 5 Easy Steps
You don’t need any special tools, just a paper towel and a few minutes.
-
Park on Level Ground
Turn off the engine, let it cool, and make sure the car is sitting flat.
-
Pop the Hood
Find the oil dipstick; it usually has a yellow or brightly colored handle that is by the engine.
-
Pull & Wipe
Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean with a paper towel or rag.
-
Reinsert & Check
Place the dipstick back in fully, then pull it out again. The oil should be between the 'min' and 'max' lines.
-
Check Oil Condition
-
Amber/Clear = Oil is good.
-
Dark/Brown = Change your oil soon.
-
Milky/Foamy = Possible coolant issue; schedule an inspection at a trusted auto repair shop.
-
When to Change or Add Oil
-
Low oil: Add the recommended oil for your vehicle, but don’t ignore why it’s low.
-
Dirty oil: Schedule an oil change right away.
-
Frequent top-offs: You may have a leak or another engine problem that requires professional service.
At MotorAbility, our ASE-certified technicians also inspect for leaks, worn gaskets, and other hidden issues to keep your car safe and reliable.
